Job Posting: Senior MEMS Process Integration Engineer (m/f/d)

Foundry Interface and Design for Manufacturability

i-ROM GmbH | Full-time | Remote work possible | Working language: English

About i-ROM and the role

Based in Chemnitz, Germany, i-ROM develops MEMS simulation software and provides MEMS design consulting services.

In this role, you will work with our design team and external foundries to translate MEMS device requirements into manufacturable designs. You will assess process and layout compatibility, identify fabrication risks and use simulation and measurement results to recommend improvements.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess foundry process flows, material stacks, capabilities and design rules against MEMS device requirements. Clarify process limitations and validation needs with foundry partners.

  • Review GDS layouts together with layer definitions, process flows and cross-sections. Identify design rule violations and manufacturing risks.

  • Develop compact, process-specific test layouts to characterize fabrication capabilities, assess process quality and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Define measurement plans and evaluation criteria for these test structures, and interpret the results with designers and foundry partners.

  • Investigate fabrication issues using layout information, process records, microscopy, metrology and device test data.

  • Recommend practical process or design improvements and assess their effectiveness.

  • Coordinate technical discussions with foundries and designers. Document review findings, track action items and keep layout and process documentation consistent.

Required qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical expertise.

  • At least three years of experience in MEMS or microfabrication, including practical work in process integration, process development or collaboration between design and fabrication teams.

  • A sound understanding of complete MEMS process flows and the interactions between individual process steps.

  • The ability to relate GDS layouts to fabricated structures and assess their manufacturability.

  • Experience interpreting microscopy, metrology and device test data and turning findings into actionable recommendations.

  • Clear technical communication in English, an independent approach to resolving technical issues and willingness to visit foundry partners as needed.

Preferred experience

  • Technical collaboration with external MEMS foundries or experience working within a foundry.

  • Pre-tape-out reviews, process characterization or validation of process changes.

  • Expertise in DRIE, SOI processing, MEMS release or wafer bonding.

  • Proficiency with layout tools such as KLayout.

  • Chinese language skills welcome to support collaboration with partners in Asia.

Employment arrangements

Remote work is possible. Work base and travel between Germany and Asia to be agreed. Salary will reflect your experience and the responsibilities of the role. Contract terms and benefits will be discussed during the recruitment process.

How to apply

Please send your CV to steffi.bauer@i-rom.de, including your current location, earliest start date and salary expectations.

You are also welcome to include a brief, non-confidential example of a project that demonstrates your experience in MEMS process integration, manufacturability assessment or fabrication problem-solving.
